John Hoskin b. 1921 (BAA 1957-68) Born in Cheltenham. Trained as an architectural draughtsman. 1942-47 Army. 1950 began painting and in 1953 began working on sculpture. 1954 assisted Lynn Chadwick; exhibited London Group. 1957 first one-man exhibition Lords Gallery; stayed with Chadwick at same time as Potworowski who told him that there was a job in the BAA Sculpture Department; after contacting Ellis he was shortly offered job. Based at Cricklade, initially taught two days a week on his own, later joined by other colleagues including Michael Pennie; became Principal Lecturer in Sculpture. 1958 executed ‘Exalted Christ’ St Stephen’s Church, Bristol. 1959 group exhibition of sculpture Middelheim Park, Antwerp; Moments of Vision Rome-New York Foundation, Rome. 1961 one-man exhibition Matthiesen Gallery. 1964 Painting and Sculpture of a Decade 54-64 Tate Gallery; one-man exhibition Grosvenor Gallery. 1965 British Sculpture in the Sixties Tate Gallery. 1968-71 Sculptor in Residence, University of Lancaster. 1971 one- man exhibition Arnolfini, Bristol. 1975 Garage Art and Serpentine Gallery. 1978-86 Professor of Fine Art, Leicester Polytechnic. 58 Maquette for 'Suncat’ 1957 mild steel 13 x 6 x 3 inches Exh: Moments of Vision Rome-New York Art Foundation Inc.
