Howard Hodgkin b. 1932 (BAA 1956-66) Born in London. 1949-50 Camberwell School of Art. 1950- 54 BAA where arranged first exhibition in England of Derain’s work with Colin Thompson and exhibition of Indian and Persian paintings (collector of Indian works of art. from an early age, subsequent visits to India). 1954-56 part- time assistant art master Charterhouse School. 1956 began teaching BAA part-time. Taught Drawing for first year then Painting. 1962 first one-man exhibition Arthur Tooth & Sons. 1962 bought house in Wiltshire, left BAA. 1966-72 taught Chelsea School of Art. 1963 British Painting in the Sixties Whitechapel Art Gallery. 1969 first exhibited Kasmin (until 1976). 1970 one-man exhibition Arnolfini, Bristol. 1972-76 Trustee, Tate Gallery. 1973 one-man exhibition Kornblee Gallery, New York. 1975-76 Tutor Royal College of Art. 1976-77 Fellow in Creative Art, Brasenose College, Oxford. 1976 one-man exhibition Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (Arts Council touring exhibition); 1977 exhibition of prints, Museum of Modern Art; 1978 Howard Hodgkin: Indian Views British Council touring exhibition, India. 1978- 85 Trustee, National Gallery. 1979 selected The Artist’s Eye National Gallery. 1982 selected Six Indian Painters Tate Gallery and exhibited Howard Hodgkin’s Indian Leaves Tate Gallery; Indian Drawings Hayward Gallery (Arts Council Touring ExhibItion 1983). 1984 Venice Biennale. 1985 retrospective Whitechapel Art Gallery; won Turner Prize. 1988 one-man exhibition Waddington Galleries (with whom exhibited since 1976) and Knoedler, New York. |
