Peter Kinley
1912-1988 (BAA & BCHE 1971-88)


Born in Vienna. 1936 left Austria. 1944-48 served British
Army, studied one year Dusseldorf Academy. having spent
latter part of time in army in Germany. 1949-53 St Martin’s
School of Art. 1951 first exhibited Young Contemporaries.
1954 first one-man exhibition Gimpel Fils (frequently over
following ten years). 1954-64 taught St Martin’s School of
Art. 1956 selected by Herbert Read for Critics Choice Arthur
Tooth & Sons; 1961 exhibited Paul Rosenberg, New York.
1962/63 British Art Today. San Francisco (touring exhibition);
1963 British Painting in the Sixties Tate Gallery. 1965-70
taught Wimbledon School of Art. 1968 first of several one-
man exhibitions, Arthur Tooth & Sons. 1971 taught BAA
initially part-time, moved to Corsham, became Head of
Painting (retired from BCHE Summer 1988). 1976 first
visited India, exhibited in A Proper Study. British Council
travelling exhibition of India. 1980 one-man exhibition
Arnolfini, Bristol; 1982 retrospective MOMA, Oxford; 1985
Victoria Art Gallery, Bath. 1986 one-man exhibition Kettle’s
Yard Gallery, Cambridge (touring).
