Adrian Heath
1920-1992 (BAA 1956-77)


Born in Burma. 1925 came to England. 1938 pupil of
Stanhope Forbes, Newlyn, Cornwall. 1939 Slade School of
Art. Joined RAF, 1941-45 POW camp where he met Terry
Frost and encouraged him to paint. 1945-47 resumed studies
at Slade School of Art; travelled to France, first one-man
exhibition Musêe des Beaux Arts, Carcassone. 1949 re-met
Terry Frost in St Ives. 1951 returned to Cornwall. 1951
Abstract Art AIA Gallery. 1951-53 arranged exhibitions of
abstract art in his Fitzroy Street Studio. 1953 his book
Abstract Art: Its Origins and Meaning published; first of
frequent one-man exhibitions Redfern Gallery. 1954 included

in Lawrence Alloway’s Nine Abstract Artists (with Scott and
Frost etc.). 1955-64 Chairman AIA. Introduced to Ellis via
Scott and Wynter. 1956 began teaching part-time travelling
from London. 1959 first of three one-man exhibitions
Hanover Gallery. 1966 became Senior Lecturer in Painting
at BAA, left 1977. 1962 elected member London Group.
1963 British Painting in the Sixties Tate Gallery. 1964 Painting
and Sculpture of a Decade 54-64

served on Arts Council Art panel. 1969 Artist in Residence
University of Sussex. 1971/72 retrospective Bristol City Art

became part-time lecturer University of Reading. 1981 one-
man exhibition Pallant House, Chichester. 1984 British
Council tour of Norway. 1985 St Ives 1939-64 Tate Gallery.
1988 one-man exhibition Redfern Gallery.
