Anthony Fry
b. 1927 (BAA 1953-59)


Born in Theydon Bois, Essex. Studied Edinburgh College of
Art. 1949-50 Camberwell School of Art under Coldstream,
Pasmore and Rogers; met Terry Frost; work included in
Euston Road and Others Wakefield Art Gallery (touring
exhibition). 1950-52 Rome Scholarship. On return joined
BAA to teach painting, living at Box. Initially ran
Department, teaching full-time for 2/3 years. then part-time
(also taught Camberwell 1956-60). 1954 member London
Group. 1955 first one-man exhibition St George’s Gallery
with William Scott’s encouragement; Willis Galleries, Bath,
with BAA colleagues. 1957 first of frequent exhibitions
Leicester Gallery. 1961 Harkness Fellowship for travel and
study, USA; exhibited Durlacher Bros. New York. 1961
taught Chelsea School of Art (to present). 1963 British
Painting in the Sixties
Tate Gallery. 1964 London Group 1914-
64 Jubilee Exhibition, Tate Gallery. 1965-81 several one-man
exhibitions New Art Centre. 1967 Drawing Towards Painting
