Rod was so animated when he found this site especially as his photo was on it, asleep again!
I recognise a few people such as the photo with Mick Webb (you had him as an unknown first year). Great to see the cold baked-bean eating Andy Cross pictured as well. I bump into him on occasion in London.
My sister Ruth married Chalky White from Fine Art (divorced) and they had Pepper who is now 20 and studying music at Brighton Uni. Chalky has just remarried and lives in Devon.
I married Rod Clark in 1985 when we met at the RCA and we have Kingsley age 13 and Bunty age 8. We live in Brighton about a mile from Steve Carter from Jersey also featured on the site. I met Liz Jerret last week at my sons running club, who lives in Lewes and countless others here in Brighton who crop up every month or so. I recognised Penny Grist from a reunion photo, whom I was also at Theale Green with - Hello Penny! Simon Johnston, who was best man at our wedding lives with his wife Ros in L.A. and we keep in touch. We are still best mates with Darrel Rees who runs Heart Illustration Agency based in London and New York and who married Lara 4 years ago (no bairns yet). I regrettably only did my Foundation studies at Corsham and then moved onto a degree at Leicester Poly. (because I fell in love with a fellow Foundation student, David O'Higgins, who was not offered a place on the Degree as I had been!) but I have to say that I loved every minute of the time that I spent in this odd little town. Never have I worked so hard, nor enjoyed anything so much. I lived in Spiders Barn and then worked in the Cross Keys for a while. I remember the spirited Angela Cocaine who lived out at Biddestone, where are you now? I remember John Furnival trying to teach me observational drawing in a high wind in the gardens of Monks Park and thinking that I would die of cold. Film Society at the Court and skinny dipping late at night and being chased by the caretaker across the lawns and falling flat on my face when I tripped over the low level invisible wire that surrounded the lawns! Ah! happy days! I would give my eye teeth to be transported back there for a weekend.

I would love to hear from any fellow Foundation students from 1980/81 and Rod would love to hear from his contemporaries as well.

obituary
Gareth Ball (sculpture 66-69) was taken ill on 21st November 2003 and died within minutes of reaching hospital. His family are devastated by his sudden and untimely death. His funeral was held at Aldershot Crematorium on December 1st 2003.

Now goes by the handle of Fin. Did MA in Painting and now working more or less exclusively in Multimedia, computer-based artwork. Trying to get through practice-based Fine Art PhD.
I visited Corsham for the first time since leaving about 2 years ago and I had to be forcibly restrained from grabbing strangers by the arm and gabbling excitedly "I used to live there, in that room". I had a fabulous time at Corsham, sometimes wild, sometimes wrought with teenage angst, bizarre, random, always remembered with affection and some hilarity. As good a way as I know of starting life as an artist.

Only occasionally do I stop here to read. Always I end up moved by how much this time, so well spent, shared by so few, means to so many. Mind you if you can remember it, you weren't there.... I remember Brian Popay, always an act, and it was small enough that John Kerr and I must have met - sad what aging brings, John, but creaking gates last longest. Stumbled across the site and almost immediately burst into tears! 55 years old ex-Graphics student. My first heart attack behind me (1996). Worked for years in advertising in London (and taught at Camberwell School of Art for 5 years) and since 1978 here in Holland (Amsterdam - where else?). I have just spent the whole afternoon and evening looking back at Corsham. I was so excited to find this treasure trove from the past!

I was in Don Whiteford’s year - you already have a photo collection from him. I would really like you to give him my email address, if that’s how it’s done. It would be so excellent to talk to him again. I’d be happy to put in a bit about me. My cousin, Michael Warren told me about this site, he was a student in about 1970, I was there from 77-81.

I am delighted to find this site, and see pictures and information about a lost time. For me, it wasn’t magical I really thought life was like that. My personal life remained unstable till I married, and Corsham was a sunny chapter: It wasn’t till I left that I discovered the real world!

I taught in Kent for two years, and then worked at IPC as an editorial offers controller till I left with my first baby, Charlie, now almost 14 (its September 2003) then had Olivia, who is nearly 11 now and have been teaching part time since that time till last January. I have begun a masters degree in visual studies at Goldsmiths. I’m half way through it now, and feel very transitional, not part of a school, and not back into studying properly yet lived in Rochester since 1982, married Alan in 1988 or 87 I have been bad at keeping in touch with people, I guess.

I haven’t seen Sue Langford for 18 months, we went to their wedding in east London, where I met Bev (Yates) now Bell and her boys; she has been a primary school teacher in Bridport for a long time. She came up after Christmas, and between her and Rosemary, I decided to do some more studying. Mark and Rosemary Capper run a music mail order business in Rochester. I recognised Mark in Pet City, not having seen him for about 20 years by the shape of his head! He’s still handsome, of course! Their kids are lovely. I must tell them about this site - they’ll tell you themselves.

I’d like to make contact with people from 1977-81. Please forgive me if you thought I was a total pillock, this is a blanket apology for any unacceptable behaviour! I have become quite civilized and English, which I wasn’t then.

Don Whiteford! - great photos, I remember the excellent glasses you made out of a pair of forks! Truly sublime and remember when I drove your little greeny car back from a Monks Park party I steered, you did the gears. I couldn’t drive.. I parked right in the middle of Church Square. Write soon. Happy days.

I am so delighted to have found this website after hearing that BAA had had to leave Corsham.
I have returned there only once since I left in 1974, whilst driving home from a holiday with my daughters. We were just walking through the gates as I explained to the girls that the barn-like building to the right used to be the music school, where I had studied under the charismatic tutorage of the wonderful Henry Boys. I was very happy to bump into Andrea there, who amazingly has remained in Corsham with her husband for all these years. She gave the girls some peacock feathers and also informed me that Liam (forgotten his surname), was living somewhere near the Cross Keys but unfortunately I did not have time to visit him.
I enjoyed the picture gallery, but only recognised Rosemary Jefferies from 1972 who was also in my set. Regards... Rosemary, should you read this.
I am keen to make contact with anybody who remembers me, not least my old buddy, Richard Nye who has been so successful with his skills of animation in the Raymond Briggs movies.

Richard and I shared digs in a house in Corsham and proceeded to share a room at the Porch a while later. I also lived in Church Street for a while before moving to number 8 High Street over the butchers shop.
Fond memories of my excellent education at BAA include evenings in Bert and Flo's Pack Horse. I remember Brian Popay, Paul Chambers, Kevin Mount and Pete Bateman... to name but a few........ anyone remember Tom and Biddy Coyle?, they lived in a farmhouse at Neston.

Yes. it all starts to come back now, through the (purple) haze of time.
Remember The Farmer Giles Cafe?, the female digs in the High Street, Sir Michael Tippett sunbathing nude in his garden and complaining that students were peeping, The (still) beautiful Weavern Valley, TV evenings in Weavers Cottage, the brilliant tutors, must mention Tom Phillips and Michael Simpson.
Visits in 1968 by Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Hamilton, Ed Askew, Michael Horovitz, Jeff Nuttall, Morton Feldman. A whole new world of art and performance opened up. Chatting and drinking with them - unforgettable.
Then there was Michael Craig-Martin, Henri Chopin, the Newkie Brown Club at Beechfield, Nick and Reg and their brilliantly mad sculptures, My mate Jim Parker and his final show where he had Steve the Tattooist sitting there ready to tattoo any willing tutors! Chris Miller, living first in a lock up garage and then in a tree in Corsham Park, the "Revolution" of 1967, Mike Smith playing Incredible String Band records in his room, Pete Coleman (and his wondrous beard) playing his guitar till the early hours after some students may have experimented with mind-expanding materials (not me, of course), the chocolate digestive biscuit machine next to the pub for those late night "munchies" with a threepenny bit change sellotaped to the top, the accidental falling-through-the-ceiling at Beechfield by my good self, followed by the early morning search for an A&E department in Chippenham, the college rock group doing Velvet Underground numbers to the military staff at RAF Lyneham, with a light show consisting of me madly switching the building's one light on and off - shades of Spinal Tap - and the College Film Club in the Barn which I ran for a year, where we showed Underground Movies straight from the States, and, oh yes, some painting and sculpture in between...and all with a Government Grant! Alas, we knew it could never last! But it was fantastic while it did.
I was never very good at painting but I've gone on to be quite successful in the world of comedy and theatre, I'm still working with the Natural Theatre Company of Bath after helping to create it in 1970.

Good memories: I never realized how much alcohol the human body could consume until going to Corsham. I still have the peacock feathers the gardener gave me the day I left and remember how you could walk all night through the fields w/o fear of being mugged. Bad memories: Clifford Ellis.

I lived at No 87 Pickwick in the first yr it was used by students in 1978. Also there was Anna Dutto and Trevor Richards. I had a great year there although the winter was freezing and I resented feeding the meter with 50p's all the time. I remember that in an effort to keep the 50p going for long enough, I would switch on my TV, switch off the light and crawl under my pile of blankets to keep warm. My other alternative was to spend the evening in the Pack Horse, nursing a lager for the best part of the evening. The other thing I cannot help but remember was the sound of 2 1st yr graphic students, making out. In the winter, the whole house could hear them and in the summer, when she had the window open (all the time), the whole neighbourhood could hear them! I wish I could remember their names but I do remember the guy came from Scotland and went to school at Gordonstoun.

I'm not a former student, but when I ran the little County Branch Library in an ex-builder's hut I was friendly with Bryan Fisher, Bursar in the 1950's, and with Norman Potter, furniture designer with a workshop in Corsham who later taught at the Royal College. Bryan's son Ardan became a film editor and Norman's daughter Sally a film director (Orlando, Tango lesson). James Tower and Stephen Russ were teaching there at the time as well.

I am trying to track down Stephen Leadbeater and Patrick (Paddy) Adamson who both went to Corsham with me from 1963-1966. All of three of us were accepted from our secondary school in Hitchin. This was quite a remarkable feat for a school (St. Michael's College) who directed its pupils either toward becoming priests or to university. Art schools were never on the radar! Stephen was in the painting/printmaking/education group with me and Paddy was in the pottery/music/education group. The reason I am trying to reach them is because St. Michael's is planning a reunion (it will be our 40th) in mid-October this year. If, I could count on either of them being there I would make the trip from the States. Also, just an update on me - I have just been promoted to full professor of art + design education at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). And with all my talk about reunions, what about another one at Corsham; and yes I have done the math, it was 40 years since I started my Corsham studies. And just another thought, is anyone in contact with Tony and Tina Hoyle? They were both at Corsham and my last contact address for them was in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Your web site brought back such fond memories of my brief but wonderful time at Bath Academy of Art.
I did the Foundation Year at Corsham, 1969-70, and may have been it's first Irish student. I lodged initially on Pickwick Road with fellow-student, Bruce Allen. I later shared a flat in Bath, (Raby Place), with Paul Chambers & Kevin Mount, among others. Mike Johnston taught Painting at that time, Jack Greeves?, Sculpture, and Julia Garret, Complimentary Studies.. After a year in Corsham, I returned to Ireland and entered Trinity College, Dublin where I read English, Philosophy & Psychology. Very regrettably, I lost contact with my friends from Corsham save for Paul Chambers whom I met on a few joyous occasions when he was teaching art at Cornell University, Itacha, NY, well over a decade ago. I recently visited Corsham for what felt like the first time. I peeked through the (closed) gates, and found a peahen feather. It's a beautiful place, and your site seems to have generated many happy memories! I don't remember much from my time living there, probably because of my tender years. My parents John Warlow and Edith Raaby met whilst students at the Art College, and I was born in Chippenham in 1972. My parents both graduated and I must have been 2 when we left and moved north. Can I claim the title of the first Corsham baby?!

Wow! found it! Amazing effort. I thought that everything and everyone had just disappeared. Probably smoked a bit too much at Corsham!
Kerry Blake...Do you remember me...I remember you. I think we lived at No.5 Church St. You shared a room with Denise. Me N Raoul lived downstairs. Raoul was a good artist...fine art like you but he had a problem getting out of bed..eventually left..went back to drive buses in London. Looking back, I don't know how anyone could have had a bad time..it just didn't seem possible...oops..there I go again...Really made up that you have a lovely family Kerry...be lucky.
The lake..pitch black..dead of night the bull ..yep that was a close one and then there was the leaving of Church Street where we had it made..and I ended up with Nigel, Marion + Boyfriend, Giles, Ingrid Abery..that's another story..all living together out at Gastard House..an old totally haunted monastery from the 14th Century. I remember the floating Chinese lady..no shit..the landlord told us not to talk to her because she couldn't speak English...and then we met her one dark night in the tower room where she politely said "hello, how are you"? that was it for me and Nigel. Oh yes and with things flying about the room we left the following day...Everyone blamed the flower heads but me? well I just know it all happened.
Life was good, full on 200 miles an hour. Well actually the 200 miles an hour kind of kicked in when I met James who was in the year above me.. Sculpture student..Nice one for the Harley Davidson James...Awesome..until it went up in a ball of flames in the church yard (Church Street)...again another wild story..but all true.
Sian Davey...where are you.. do you remember The Germans..Bodo and Yogi on the motorbikes and our adventure to Stonehenge the year it got banned..we all ended up at Westbury White Horse at one hell of festival..we had some wild times..hope your life is good..your down as one of the best people I had the honour of knowing.
Paul Gunter..where are you..I can't even begin to think what you might be doing..our memories would fill a book or ten with Moose AKA Paul Curtis...if you ever get to read this..the ride in the Chevy from Leeds down to London and the Corn Field in between with Big Nigel was another top memory.

A life worth living..we had some of the best times ever..I'll carry them always..I think that could be another book..or maybe a novel..remember the beefeater? chuckle..chuckle..Did you ever marry Pete? INFORMATION PLEASE

I wonder if you can help me. I came across your website and I am searching for some information about a publication made by the college in the late 1960s /early 1970s.

I am a collector of concrete and visual poetry (and an art dealer - but that comes second!)

I have recently purchased two concrete poetry items which were stored together - one is readily identifiable as this:

Morgan, Edwin (and students of Bath Academy of Art)
Proverbfolder Woodchester: Openings Press, 1969.
A card folder, about 48cm square with hinges of black tape. Signed by Morgan on a slip glued inside the top cover. Three triangular inner covers, the whole containing 13 heavy card sheets all 47 cm square. The first sheet is the title page with a table of contents printed on the verso and listing the name of the student-artists responsible for the execution and design of each proverb. The following 12 sheets (two on coloured stock) show proverbs in variously coloured inks . The project was supervised by the publisher and visual poet, John Furnival, who was then teaching at Bath Academy.

The second item which I am trying to identify as closely as possible is a similar folio box of silkscreens - all which have a theme of Greek Gods (the entire portfolio may be entitled AEHIOUY - the names of the Greek Vowels but this is very hard to confirm). I believe (because of their link to the Morgan above and similarities in design) that they were also done in the college and may well be another in a series of works done in co-operation with Openings Press.

I have been trying to find a librarian or former staff member who may know something about this. I wonder if you are in contact with such a person or if an archive of works or library holdings still exists anywhere? Of course, wonder of wonders, should YOU know what this item was I'd be very grateful to you but that seems to be a long shot - but one never knows.

I'd appreciate if you could let me know if you might have any leads. I appreciate your time and possible reply. Thank You.

PS My own concrete poetry collection is overwhelmingly Ian Hamilton Finlay - I have over 1,000 pieces by him. I'd be keen to find items by Finlay from that period when he was associated with 'Bath Academy of Art collaborations'. Hello Gerry and a Happy New Year to you and yours.

Good idea with the password as the odd e-mail without relevance to dear old BAA and its followers did creep through occasionally! It is VERY hot here in Adelaide SA but am still busy with my printing and papermaking. Sometimes when the paper is out drying though the birds tear it in a hunt for something damp to chew!!! Can't remember that hazard in Corsham!! The worst that could happen was that 'someone' borrowed the bike to ride to Monks!!

There is now a 'slight' adjustment for 2003 Guestbook postings! Please do not be put off from adding a comment, especially if you are a visitor (did not attend BAA) and wish information or an ex-BAA relative etc. Just send me an email for the password.

This is to stop irrelevant entries by spammers... at least I hope it will!

Hi ex-BAA'ers,

This years Guestbook will be kept intact for the duration of the 12 months because of the problems encountered last year.
