Bryan Wynter 1915-1975 (BAA 1951-55) Born in London. 1937/38 Westminster School of Art. 1938- 40 Slade School of Art. Conscientious Objector during war, worked for Solly Zuckermann, Oxford University. 1945/46 settled Zennor, Cornwall, co-founder Crypt Group. 1947 first one-man exhibition Redfern Gallery. c.1950 member Penwith Society. Exhibited in Sixty Paintings for ‘51 (Arts Council) Festival of Britain. Invited to teach at BAA, on recommendation of William Scott; taught blocks of six weeks; had use of a studio in Richmond and shared a house in Corsham with William Brooker and Terry Frost. Found it difficult to switch from doing own work to teaching; worked slowly and felt frustrated; found landscape around Corsham less interesting than the Cornish landscape. 1955 exhibited at Everyman Club, Octagon, Bath with colleagues Potworowski and Lanyon. Left BAA, rented studio in The Boltons in London; 1956 painted first entirely abstract work. 1957 exhibited Metavisual, Tachiste, Abstract, Redfern Gallery and 1959 Four English Middle Generation Painters, Waddington. 1959 married Monica Harman, former Corsham student. 1960 first kinetic paintings; British Painting in the Sixties Tate Gallery; 1964 moved to Treverven St Buryan. 1975 died Penzance. 1976 retrospective, Hayward Gallery; 1977 Cornwall 1945-55 New Art Centre and subsequent one-man exhibitions; 1985 work included in St Ives exhibition, Tate Gallery. 109 Cliffscape with Boat 1952 gouache 12¼ x 20¼ inches signed and dated Exh: Cornwall 1945-1955, New Art Centre, |
