Terry Frost b. 1915 (BAA 1952-54) Born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. 1939 Army; 1941 taken prisoner, met Adrian Heath in POW camp who encouraged him to paint. 1945 evening classes Birmingham School of Art. 1946 moved to Cornwall, studied St Ives School of Painting. 1947 one-man exhibition Downing’s Bookshop, St Ives. 1947-9 Camberwell School of Art (plus unofficial year). 1949 first abstract paintings. 1950-52 assistant to Barbara Hepworth. 1952 first one-man exhibition Leicester Galleries. Visited at Porthmeor Studios by William Scott and Wiliam Brooker who had seen his drawings at the Penwith Society. 1952 invited by Ellis to teach life drawing at Corsham. Ellis had not previously encouraged academic drawing but this was requisite for NDD exams which some students had failed; Frost got good results; used plumbline, urged students to look at good drawings and did not like to draw on their work. Taught in six weeks blocks, as did other artists from Cornwall, while teaching shared house with Brooker and Wynter. Kept in touch with Heath, Pasmore, the Martins etc. in London. 1954 included in Nine Abstract Artists by Lawrence Alloway. Left Corsharn to become Gregory Fellow in Painting, University of Leeds. 1956-57 taught Leeds School of Art. Summer 1957 returned to Cornwall to paint full-time. 1960 visited USA, one-man exhibition Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York. 1961 moved to Banbury, first of frequent exhibition Waddington Gallery (until 1978). 1963 taught Coventry Art College. 1963 British Painting in the Sixties Tate Gallery; 1964 Painting and Sculpture of a Decade 54-64 Tate Gallery. 1964 part-time teaching Reading University, full-time from 1965. 1964 retrospective Laing Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (touring). 1974 moved to Newlyn. 1976-77 retrospective Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, Arts Council & SW Arts tour (including Serpentine). 1977 Cornwall 1945-75 New Art Centre. 1977-81 Professor of Painting, University of Reading. 1985 St Ives 1939-64 Tate Gallery. 1987/88 Terry Frost Painting in the 1980’s University of Reading (touring). |
